The Passing of Bud Morgan
April 5, 2011

Today, we lay a fellow Judoka to rest.

Bud Morgan died on the morning of April 2, 2011.

Bud received his Judo Godan (5th Dan Black Belt) from Sensei Zdenek Matl last year. At 75 years old, he was a no-nonsense Judoka with more than 50 years experience. As we would say in class, “Bud’s old school, hard style Judo”, and he was.

Bud has been involved in Judo competition since he started his Judo studies with Vince Tamura in Dallas, TX. Competing where ever he could up to and including Nationals. Some of his competition accomplishments can be found in 1965 and 1966 issues of Black Belt Magazine. When he moved to Houston, TX, he studied under Karl E Geis. Since he’s been here in Round Rock, he has studied and practiced with us at Round Rock Martial Arts. In the 2006 International Masters Championships he competed and medaled.

Bud was an honorable, honest, and dedicated man. He wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Bud would still get on the mat, work with guys, teach them, coach them, and finish out the night with Shiai (free fighting). There aren’t many Judoka at Bud’s age still willing to mix it up with anyone in the school, putting himself out there as a higher ranked practitioner. It didn’t matter how old, how big, how skilled, or how in shape the other guy was, Bud wanted to Shiai.

It was awesome to see him take another Judoka, who under estimated him because he was “the old man”, and just snatch them off the ground and throw them with a huge O-Soto-Gari. You could just see the look on the Uke’s face as they are going through the air, clearly realizing they made a mistake and this “old man” was serious.

We are most definitely going to miss Bud’s insight, knowledge, and experience. Thank you Bud for your lifelong dedication to Judo as a sport and an art. We will miss you.

Sincerely,

Chad Haas
