Learning how to throw with control and not wild slamming people to the ground allows Tori (person throwing) to dictate what happens next. In this case we are controlling Uke (person being thrown) to a specific position in order to set the arm lock as soon as they hit the floor.

Having this kind of control over your technique is important because you can decide if you need or want to go to the ground as well as throw people WITHOUT hurting them. This is extremely important when fighting multiple attackers, dealing with under age children, and older folks. HULK slamming and spiking people can put you in more danger or more trouble because of your lack of control. This is also a crucial skill for Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, and EMS professionals.

Sport Judo focuses on following the person to the ground and landing on them to score the winning point, but without proper control, you also become a victim of your own technique. This puts you at more risk of being choked or arm locked. You got the throw, great! But, you got choked out in the end, so you ultimately lost. This is why we practice the art of Judo for what it was originally intended.
